Key Points

  • Tesla renamed its top-level driver assistance product in Europe from Full Self-Driving to Tesla Assisted Driving.
  • The name change likely aims to help speed approval of the driver assistance system in Europe.
  • EU regulators are scheduled to vote on the adoption of Tesla Assisted Driving in December.

Tesla renamed its top-level driver assistance product in Europe.

What was once Full Self-Driving is now Tesla Assisted Driving. The name still appears as Full Self-Driving (Supervised) in the U.S. Tesla didn’t respond to a request for comment about the details of the name change.

The move likely aims to help speed approval of the system in Europe. The FSD name has caused some consternation over time. Tesla’s driver assistance product, whatever the name, is impressive and can do most of the driving most of the time. It still requires human supervision all of the time, though. Full Self-Driving could give drivers the impression they don’t need to pay attention.

The Netherlands approved FSD, now TAD, in April, which opened the door to additional approvals. EU regulators are set to vote on TAD adoption in December. Full approval requires 15 of 27 member states and 65% of the EU population, says Barclays analyst Dan Levy.

European approval opens up a new market for Tesla. It ended the second quarter with about 1.5 million customers paying for FSD. Investors hope that number rises.

Investors value recurring subscription-based revenue. What’s more, FSD technology underpins Tesla’s robo-taxis business, which was launched in June 2025. An expected proliferation of Tesla’s AI-trained robo-taxis is a big reason Tesla has a trillion-dollar valuation.

Tesla stock was up 0.1% at $382.97 in premarket trading Monday, while S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average futures were up 0.1% and 0.2%, respectively.
