motif - free, multiplayer, self-hostable, non-destructive UI/vector graphics editor
Hey guys! Excited to share an alpha build of motif - an open-source vector graphics and UI design editor. Compared to traditional vector graphics software, motif is more of a blend of non-destructive CAD techniques and the power of Blender's Geometry Nodes, while offering the simplicity of apps like Figma. The core idea revolves around thinking about design as a "program", where each step we execute a statement. Those can be things like creating a rectangle, cutting an edge at a point, joining vertices, etc - and executing all of the statements results in the final output graphic. This allows you have things like non-destructive editing, full document creation history, and branching (in the future). It's currently still very much work-in-progress - currently in alpha state, and I'm adding new features and polishing up existing stuff every day. Currently I'm working on adding prefabs - an alternative to Figma's components. As a part of the alpha test, I've hosted a free-for-all server where you can try out the multiplayer! Check it out here ! There's probably still a bunch of bugs in the code, so I'd love it if you could try it out and let me know how it feels, what can be improved, or if there's any idea that you had that was missing from Figma, Illustrator, or other software. The end goal is to provide a free singleplayer and self-hostable multiplayer experience, and to cover pretty much everything that's possible in Figma (including custom shaders, but with an actual graph editor, not an AI chatbot; and animations), while offering more powerful tools like Generator Nodes for designs that are more easily expressible in terms of logic. The source is available on GitHub , and the demo webapp is available here . Do note that currently the multiplayer is fully public, so be wary of posting any personal information and please do not write any profanities :) I've been working on this for the past year, and if you would like to follow updates and progress, feel free to star the source repository! For self-hosting - it's still in alpha, so the overall approach might change in the future. Linux-x64 server builds are available on GitHub actions , and can be started by just launching the executable. The frontend editor can be used from the webapp link, and the sources can also be obtained from the actions. macOS and iPadOS apps can be built locally - I'll configure the builds on the CI once the project reaches a beta state. Functionally they are identical to the webapp, with the only exception being a built-in local server so that you can share your work between devices on the local network.
