This Salt Lake Tribune article, sympathetic to the Venezuelan immigrants, uses the interesting phrase “self-deport”:
“It’s left some loyal customers afraid to eat out and led to about half their workforce disappearing, either choosing to abandon work out of fear or in some cases, deciding to self-deport.”
The phrase reminds me of Orwell's essay on Politics and the English Language. He gives as an example “Millions of peasants are robbed of their farms and sent trudging along the roads with no more than they can carry: this is called ‘transfer of population’.”
Here we have “deciding to self-deport” replacing “driven their homes” or “terrorized into leaving the country”.
