When a TIPS fund's underlying bonds are given an inflation adjustment, then those underlying bonds are all sold over time by the fund manager, has the inflation protection for the inflation that caused those inflation adjustments disappeared even though the higher costs that inflation caused remain? [I understand how TIPS ladders are fully protected.]
Not sure I completely understand what you are asking, but sold/matured bonds within the fund would be replaced by new bonds which will include an ongoing inflation adjustment. The fund can be best viewed as a rolling ladder.
