Daiwa Says Information on 110,000 Clients May Have Been Leaked
Daiwa Securities Group Inc. said information on as many as 110,000 clients may have been stolen after the servers of an external vendor were hacked.
Japan’s second-largest brokerage received a report from vendor Scala Communications Inc. on Saturday that it found evidence of client data being leaked due to unauthorized access, Daiwa said in a statement on Monday. The information included names and account numbers.
The data can’t be used to access securities accounts or conduct online trading, and no inappropriate transactions associated with the leak have been detected, Daiwa said. Its own systems haven’t been breached, it added.
The intrusion adds to recent incidents in the country where companies from parcel delivery firm Yamato Holdings Co. to Sakura Internet Inc. also suffered unauthorized access to customer information. In South Korea, banks have also been hit by client data breaches in recent days, spurring authorities to order security checks.
A spokesperson for Daiwa apologized for causing concerns to customers and stakeholders and said the firm takes the matter seriously.
Shares of Daiwa erased gains to fall almost 1% in the afternoon session in Tokyo.
