Russia Again Strikes Kyiv Bridge as Infrastructure Attacks Widen

Russian forces struck a major bridge in Kyiv spanning the Dnipro River for the second day in a row as Moscow continues to target Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure.

“This morning, the Russians once again struck the Pivnichnyi Bridge in Kyiv with a drone,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Sunday on the X platform. They also struck a pharmaceutical warehouse in Sumy and a communications facility in Dnipro; one person was killed and six injured in the attacks, he said.

Emergency services were en route to the bridge, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram.

Separately, Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv on Sunday, reiterating Germany’s backing for Ukraine and the dangers posed by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Merz is expected to hold talks with Zelenskyy.

The latest strikes come a day after Russia hit the same bridge, also known as the Northern Bridge, as well as a logistics center near the capital and follows another strike on Kyiv’s southern road-and-rail bridge last week.

Moscow’s forces also struck a logistics center of the Nova Poshta delivery service in the southern city of Chornomorsk, a data center in Odessa, and a dry cargo vessel on the Black Sea, the Russian Defense Ministry said Sunday on Telegram.

The latest attacks highlight Russia’s intensified campaign against Ukraine’s civil infrastructure. Kremlin forces have targeted residential areas, internet and mobile phone providers and energy facilities, in addition to cargo vessels. Moscow has aggressively attacked Ukrainian energy sites ahead and during winter throughout the more than four-year war, as it seeks to depress morale and compel Kyiv to accept its terms to end the fighting.

Zelenskyy told the Financial Times last week that the increase in strikes on civilian targets had come after Putin instructed his military leaders to abandon the rules of war. Zelenskyy cited intelligence intercepted by Kyiv; Russia hasn’t commented on the claim.

“It is important that Ukraine is not left alone against this terror,” Zelenskyy said on Sunday. “Russia must be held accountable for this escalation.”

Russia’s Defense Ministry said its forces intercepted 559 Ukrainian drones overnight across several regions as well as the annexed Crimean peninsula and the Azov and Black Seas. Ukraine said it shot down 123 drones and two Banderol missiles out of the 135 total launched overnight by Russia.
