Self hosting 100+ domains and 8000+ mailboxes with a twist
Hi folks, I know self-hosting email is usually discouraged because deliverability can be painful, especially from residential IPs or low-reputation VPSs. What if you self-host only the email storage and client , while using a service like AWS SES or whatever for sending and receiving? Incoming mail goes through SES to your server, outgoing mail is queued locally and sent through SES, and your actual mailbox data stays on infrastructure you control. You can back it up however you want. That way you get cheap self-hosted email without having to worry as much about IP reputation and deliverability. I've done this for multiple businesses in the past two years and never heard any complaints. Only good stuff about the saved monies. Happy to post a guide here if this will be helpful or open source my server+client code for those interested. Curious what you think
