I built PasteDB: An open-source, E2EE alternative to Pastebin with a built-in CLI, VS Code Extension, and zero-db "Link Pastes"

Hey r/selfhosted, I wanted to share a project I've been building called PasteDB . It started as a personal learning experiment to design a production-grade web application, and it has grown to support a healthy monthly user base. It is entirely open-source under the MIT License . The goal was to build a modern, secure paste-sharing platform that puts developer workflow and privacy first, eliminating the friction of traditional pastebins. 🔐 The Privacy Architecture Browser-side End-to-End Encryption (E2EE): Private and unlisted pastes are fully encrypted in the browser before upload. The server administrators never touch or store the encryption keys. Trusted Device Key Sync: You can securely mirror your local encryption keys (KEK) across your own devices using a one-time QR code handshake, keeping the server entirely blind to the keys. Database-Free "Link Pastes": For sharing highly sensitive items like API tokens or one-time keys, the app compresses and packs the payload directly into a URL hash using URL-safe compression. Nothing touches the database. Burn-After-Read & Custom Expiry: Automatically destroys data after the first successful open or sets custom time windows (10 min to 30 days). 🛠 Built-in Developer Workflow Tools Native CLI Client: You can pipe files straight from the terminal ( pdb create app.py ) and get back a deployment link instantly. VS Code Extension: Upload current workspaces, selection buffers, or manage active snippets from the secure storage dashboard inside the IDE. SDKs & API Keys: Includes official Python and Node.js SDK bindings alongside programmatic REST access keys. In-Viewer Execution: Run supported programming languages or view an active HTML/Markdown live preview directly from the paste container page. P2P Nearby Transfer: Push code shares instantly to surrounding client devices via local handshakes without generating an open public index link. 🚀 The Stack Frontend: Vanilla HTML, CSS, JavaScript (using Highlight.js, Marked.js, DOMPurify) Backend: FastAPI (Python) Database & File Store: MongoDB, Cloudinary (for image attachment handling) 💻 Open Source & Feedback The code is modular and open for review. I would absolutely love to hear what features this community values most in a sharing dashboard, or get your feedback on the E2EE key sync architecture.
