You Don’t Have To Say Yes to Every Crazy

This, too, is something that differentiates a job from school. Not every initiative is optional, but most people will consider what others want most of the time.

You can say things like, “No, I don’t want to do this,” “I don’t believe this will pay off,” and “I don’t see the purpose here.” People are looking for buy-in on their initiatives. Who wants someone on board who doesn’t have faith in the mission?

Should you still end up forced to participate, however, at the very least, no one will be surprised if you don’t do your best work. Not that you shouldn’t try, but given the circumstances, chances are, your subconscious will somewhat sabotage you regardless. And even that is okay! Sometimes, projects must fail for someone to admit they were wrong.

Occasionally, crazy is worth it. A great opportunity comes along, but the timing sucks. Then, you roll up your sleeves and do the best you can with what you’ve got. At least you capitalized on solid odds! But, often, crazy is just crazy. Let your first reaction be, “No, thanks,” and hope everyone agrees.
