OpenAI Announces ‘Dots’ Agents at DevDay

OpenAI announced its new agent product called “Dots” at its annual Developer Day on Tuesday, jumping into the increasingly crowded market for AI assistants

The announcement, which confirmed The Information’s reporting this month that OpenAI was working on a productivity-focused agent, follows Meta Platforms’ recent launch of its Muse AI assistant and SpaceX’s release in August of its Grok Bot agent.

“You can delegate ambitious pieces of work” to Dots, said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. For example, a user could tell their Dot to “find out what’s slowing down our app” or to “get our app off this legacy API before it shuts down,” he said.

OpenAI also announced ChatGPT Space, a feature in the ChatGPT app that allows users and Dots to work together on shared documents, similar to Notion. For example, a Dot could update a graph showing customer feedback every hour. Soon Space will also support working collaboratively on presentation slides, Altman said. The Information reported last year that OpenAI was working on software that would compete with office products from Microsoft and Google.

OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Sol, which the company says is nearly as capable as GPT-6 Astra but at one-fifth the price. That release comes after OpenAI said on Monday that it had decided not to release the AI model that it had intended to release as GPT-6.1 Astra due to its results on safety tests. It also released a new “ultrafast” mode for GPT-6 Astra that will cost six times as much as the standard pricing but will allow the model to run eight times faster.

The company also made several security-related product announcements. Those included Codex Security Cloud, which will help companies do automated vulnerability investigation and repository scanning, and Private Intelligence, which ensures that businesses’ data stays private.
