Alabama Says TikTok to Pay Up to $300 Million Over Child Safety

Alabama’s attorney general said TikTok has agreed to pay up to $300 million and adopt new user protection measures to settle the state’s child-safety lawsuit that was set for a jury trial to begin Monday.

The settlement announced Friday by Alabama will avert the first courtroom test in a wave of state cases against the popular social media platform. It comes just a month after Meta Platforms Inc. agreed to a historic deal to pay as much as $18 billion and make safety improvements to resolve claims with almost all US states.

“This is a great day for Alabama parents,” Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall said in a statement. “Tonight, they can rest easier knowing real protections are in place to shield their children from the dangers of social media addiction.”

TikTok didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
