Possible Mistake in Bell's Book Speakable and Unspeakable in Quantum

In chapter 3 of Bell's book Speakable and Unspeakable in Quantum Mechanics, I don't get how he gets the highlighted expression. I only get it if the sum is a mistake and should be in the absolute value. Is it a mistake? A quick glance by anyone who knows quantum well should be fine.
