Do early-stage startups actually hire hybrid AI + content people, or is it better to specialize first? i will not promote

’ve done 3 internships across video, AI, and software since graduating in 2025, and I'm trying to figure out where a hybrid skill set actually makes sense in startups. My first internship was video editing at a marketing agency. I left after 2 months because I wanted to stay closer to the technical side. After that, I freelanced for an AI startup making explainer videos for their open-source agents. That turned into a 5-month internship where I worked on Instagram content, AI demo videos, and also built agents on their stack. I enjoyed that combination much more than doing either one in isolation. I’m now interning at a voice AI company, where I’m getting experience with prompt engineering, client-facing work, and AI products. It has made me realize that I still enjoy the technical side, but I also like explaining and demonstrating what gets built. For people who have worked at early-stage startups: how common are genuinely hybrid roles like this? Is it generally better to build deep expertise in one area first, or can being able to build an AI product and communicate/demo it effectively be valuable enough to make a role around? Curious how founders and early startup employees have seen this play out.
