The size of the settlement matters.
Most people wouldn't be terrified of a $1K settlement (which wouldn't even cover both of those, unless they were both very cheap ones).

At $10K that could easily be 10% or more of the settlement.
At $100K your splurge is probably okay.
At $1 million, yeah that would be both exciting and terrifying for most people.

Be wary of "friends and family" that learn of your windfall, because they will have lots of excellent (for them) ideas of what to do with the money.

Same for many "advisers'. On the other hand, how much effort do you want to put into learning about money?
