Yearly update options

I have the yearly upgrade option on my Go5G Plus line but since I have iPhone 15 pro and never used it to upgrade to 17 pro last year, does it make sense to buy a 17 now and then try for the yearly upgrade next year? Vs buying 18 pro and paying $250+ extra? Currently I only get $930 for my trade in
