So with all the talk about long TIPS recently, I got to wondering which provides the most protection for future inflation risk. ... My thinking is that Equities would provide a better long term guarantee against inflation.

For a guarantee to match the CPI-U up to 30 years from now, the only investment available is TIPS.

The reason many people don't invest all of their money in TIPS is the "equity risk premium". This is the idea that equities will provide a higher return than TIPS over long periods of time. Investors (including me) like that idea. It's not a guarantee though...
