In quantum mechanics, how do we know how many particles are in a given space?
In non-relativistic quantum mechanics, constructing the wave function of a system requires knowledge of the total number of particles inside it. How do experimental physicists look at a box and decide "yes, there are three electrons and two photons here" so that they later know how many inputs the wave function they use for modelling should have?
