Does stealth make sense when your main concern is competitors figuring out your technology? I will not promote
I’m genuinely curious how other founders think about startup stealth. I launched my product about a year ago and have around 5,000 registered users organically with zero marketing, purely from SEO. I’m currently gaining around 200 new registered users plus another 800 unregistered users organically every month. I also just got my first $400k in funding. The bigger thing I’ve been working on behind the scenes is a domain specific ViMoE trained on roughly 6 billion images based on my original idea. It’s extremely specific to my industry and the results have been incredible. I’ve integrated the technology into the web app and have extremely high retention. That’s where I’m starting to think about stealth. I’m not really worried about getting users. Once I start putting meaningful money into marketing, I’ll blow through the amount of organic growth I’m currently getting anyway. In that sense, I feel like the main thing I’m giving up by staying public right now is stealth. My bigger concern is competitors figuring out what the technology shift is going to do to their businesses. The companies I’m building against are about to get undercut pretty significantly if this works the way I expect. If they figure out what I’m doing too early, they have time to understand the technology, change their strategy, and start building around it while I’m still finishing everything. So I’ve been considering keeping things relatively quiet until the technology is integrated, the mobile apps are built, retention is better, and I’m ready to put the $400k heavily into marketing going into the stronger spring and summer season. Basically, I’m wondering if there’s a point where stealth is more valuable than incremental user growth, especially when you already have some organic traction and can accelerate acquisition pretty quickly with capital. Would love to hear from founders who have dealt with this. Is this actually a reasonable use of stealth, or am I overestimating how much competitors would care?
