The problem: I think that people in general are starting to reach a breaking point in paying SaaS companies to steal their data. But self-hosting isn't more widespread because it requires a fair bit of technical know-how to setup and maintain. My idea: Think of a blade server chassis scaled down to a home appliance form factor. Something that can sit on the shelf, next to the wifi router. The chassis has a very minimal amount of compute and storage + firmware + some control plane software. Users then buy modules containing compute and storage. Most modules would be empty, but you could also buy them containing pre-configured OSS software. Imagine something like an old school Atari 2600 or NES cartridge, but instead of containing a ROM, it contains a single-board computer (SBC), like a Raspberry Pi Compute Module. Except for AI-based stuff or applications like transcoding 4k video, a SBC could run pretty much anything a household user would need. This isn't much different than the Home Assistant Green product, just modularized.
