Returning Vested Equity (I will not promote)

When leaving a startup when you have a significant chunk of vested equity, is it common for the founder to demand a large chunk of that equity back while offering nothing in return with the reason being that the equity will be considered dead-wood and render the company uninvestable if not returned?
