For the “P(doom)” scenario—AI kills us all—a lot of things would have to be allowed to happen that are very unlikely to be allowed to happen. Look at H.G. Wells’s apocalyptic vision of a world with air power, or the doom predicted from genetic engineering. In the early atomic age, who knew how well access to enriched uranium and plutonium might be controlled?

It’s easy, before a million things happen, to draw a straight line from a new technology to the end of the world.
