Bunch is back for Golden Gate

Bunch is back under development. Not a grand relaunch, just me picking the project up again, starting with the unglamorous work of making it run on macOS 27 (Golden Gate).

What shipped

The first updates are all about launching and staying alive on the new OS: the menu extra showing up, bunches actually appearing in that menu, the Dock icon staying out of the way, and Sparkle not dying the moment you hit Update (a recent issue I caused).

Grab the latest update from the download page. If anything still feels wrong after you update, file it on GitHub. I would rather see a short report than guess.

Where it might go

I have some ideas for moving forward. One I keep coming back to is a more compiler-like processor for advanced Bunch files: parse once, catch mistakes earlier, and stop treating a complex bunch like a pile of lines that get interpreted on the fly.

I am also open to feature requests. It’s been a while. If something has been annoying you, or you have a workflow Bunch almost handles, say so on the issue tracker.

I know launching apps on a specific desktop Space has been a common request, but I still don’t see a way forward with that one. I wish Apple made that easier.

I’m considering open sourcing the app. It’s not a terribly embarrasing code base that I don’t want to share, it’s just something I’ve always pondered turning into a commercial app and don’t want to shoot myself in the foot. But I’m leaning in the open source direction…

A realistic pace

I cannot promise the old velocity. Bunch sat still for a long stretch, and I have other apps to work on that actually make money. I would like to keep this one going anyway. Small, useful updates beat another long silence.

If you are still launching bunches every day, thank you for waiting. More soon, in whatever size I can manage.
