While we, as UX designers, strive to reduce our ecological footprint and create a more ethical digital space in the name of sustainability, the artificial intelligence embedded in our design tools is consuming energy at an unprecedented rate. How can this modern paradox be resolved?
Sustainable UX (SUX) must now be more than just a catchy trend; it needs to become a professional and ethical fundamental. As designers, our goal should be to minimize the carbon footprint of digital products and build conscious systems that consider the entire digital product ecosystem. But what happens when the very tools we use to design these “green” interfaces — such as Figma or Adobe — move in the opposite direction? With the integration of AI features, the energy demands of our design software have skyrocketed. It is time to confront the greatest ecological dilemma of modern digital product design.
When discussing sustainable UX, the focus in recent years has been almost exclusively on the ecological footprint of the final product: fewer server requests, optimized images, and data-light interfaces. Today, however, the SUX approach has become far more comprehensive. The sustainability mindset goes beyond merely reducing carbon emissions: it encompasses social justice, digital equity, and user well-being, while shifting the focus from designing for individual users in a narrow sense to designing for the entire product ecosystem. In short, modern SUX is a holistic framework that respects both people and the environment.
The elephant in the server room: AI in our toolkit
Artificial intelligence has burst into this idyllic landscape of conscious optimization and social responsibility. Our everyday UX tools — whether for design or analytics — are rapidly integrating AI into our daily workflows. Generative UI design from a single prompt, intelligent layer renaming, copywriting, and instant visual iterations — these undoubtedly provide a massive productivity boost and relieve us of the burden of repetitive tasks.
At the same time, a serious issue arises: training and running AI models — particularly large language models (LLMs) and diffusion-based image generation algorithms — consume staggering amounts of computing power, cooling water, and electricity. While we take pride in saving 50 kilobytes on a webpage’s load time through careful design, generating a single AI-based wireframe or icon variation — say, in Figma Make — consumes orders of magnitude more energy in a remote data center. It is akin to riding an electric scooter to the organic food store while keeping a diesel generator running in our garage day and night.
How can this seemingly irresolvable paradox be addressed?
How can we remain authentic in our sustainability efforts when the “hammer” we use leaves such a massive ecological footprint? Although we do not operate the server farms of tech giants, as professionals, we have several methods at our disposal to manage this dilemma:
- Conscious AI usage (Digital Sobriety): Let’s abandon the “let’s do it because we can” mentality. We should ask ourselves: do I really need a server farm in California to spin up just to rename “Frame 134” or to write placeholder text that I could handle manually in seconds? Let’s reserve AI usage for truly complex, time-consuming, and high-value tasks where the algorithm provides genuinely irreplaceable assistance.
- A holistic view of sustainability ROI: If using AI features saves hours during the design phase, and that freed-up time is used to optimize the final product’s information architecture for sustainability or its interface for social inclusivity, the net result can be positive. The energy consumed by the tool can be amply offset in the long run by the daily energy savings and positive social impact of a streamlined application used by millions.
- Pressuring software vendors: The UX community wields significant power. Just as the profession championed user-centered design and accessibility, we can also demand ecological transparency from the tools we use. Through feedback and professional discourse, we must pressure software vendors to make the carbon footprint of specific AI features transparent (e.g., via a built-in visual indicator) and to commit to using clean energy.
Sustainable UX is not a static task to be checked off a list, but an ongoing balancing act between innovation and responsibility. AI is not inherently evil, but professional and ethical Its use requires critical thinking. As designers, it is our responsibility to apply a green mindset not only to the final product but also to the selection of the tools we use. Only in this way can the high-sounding promise of sustainable design be transformed into genuine value in the age of artificial intelligence.
