Traffic rolls along the elevated highway as Weihai’s city blocks and distant mountains open up under a blue sky

A busy downtown Weihai artery stretches into the distance, ending at a tree-covered hill

The Happiness Gate landmark glowing blue at night, city lights showing through its arch

Qixia Street’s retro-style blocks, a cyclist passing under the blue-green canopy

Tree-shaded Xinwei Side Road, with a flower studio and open-air cafe under colorful facades
Colorful orange and blue cottages along Xinwei Side Road, a red telephone booth by the door, plane-tree shadows on the pavement

A quiet stretch of Xinwei Side Road under dense plane-tree canopy, dappled shade on the road

A Catholic church hidden deep inside a residential compound, golden cross above its stone-and-tile roof

Low old brick houses at the north end of Xinwei Side Road, arched windows shaded by plane trees

The bay at Haiyuan Park filled with moored sampans, factory chimneys and mountain ridges on the far shore

Fishing boats crowding the bay off Haiyuan Park, the green hills of Liugong Island across the water

The fish market quay at Haiyuan Park, stalls along the embankment and empty foam crates stacked roadside

Sampans scattered across the bay off Haiyuan Park, a gull skimming low past the rocky shore

Red-flagged fishing boats anchored off Haiyuan Park, a crane barge and the coastal city behind

Three fishermen in orange life vests on a wooden sampan, surrounded by anchored fishing boats

Fishermen in orange life vests rafting their wooden sampans together, plastic crates of catch stacked aboard

A white crate heaped with large spiny sea cucumbers at the Haiyuan Park fish market

The fishing harbor at dusk packed with red-flagged boats, a seabird sweeping overhead

Visitors wading in the surf at Half Moon Bay, a rocky islet standing offshore

Beachgoers at Half Moon Bay, blue floats marking the swim area, red-roofed buildings climbing the hill behind

Weihai International Bathing Beach under neat rows of cirrus, a few visitors strolling the waterline

Crystal-clear water lapping at the International Bathing Beach, colored float lines crossing the frame under cirrus clouds

A translucent brownish-red strand on the sand, likely a jellyfish tentacle

Rows of red and yellow floats stretching across the clear sea toward the far shore

Early evening at the beach: a red backpack on the coarse backlit sand, children playing with swim rings in the sea
Two little girls in hats sitting on the evening beach, red and blue toy spades stuck in the sand beside them

Singers performing on the beachside 77 Sunset cafe & bar stage at night, audience seated below

Siyanlou, an old colonial villa of stone and red tile, two pairs of round windows on the gable, bamboo by the iron gate

Sanlian Island under heavy cloud: pine-topped rocky islets with waves breaking on the shore

Looking through foliage over a blue-green bay dotted with fishing boats, red flags on a near landing

Close-up of Jiangguzui beach, damp sand tinted pink by crushed scallop shells with whole shells scattered about

Cat Head Mountain from afar, its vegetated ridge reaching into the sea like a cat lying on the water

A brown rocky headland jutting into blue water along the coastal highway, surf foaming at its base
Deep-blue sea below rocky cliffs from a Cat Head Mountain lookout, a boat in the distance

White surf churning along the rocky coast by the highway, a small island on the green-blue horizon, pines on the cliffs
Green-blue sea glimpsed through pine trunks, the water deepening in color toward the horizon

The long stone stairway at Platform 3 leading to the cliff edge, visitors photographing waves on the rocks

Layered reefs reaching into the sea at the base of Cat Head Mountain’s cliffs, green waves striking the rock

Ranks of white surf rolling onto the empty sand at Jingzi Beach, an island standing offshore

Fishing boats packed into Yuanyao harbor flying red flags, masts dense against the light

Waves rolling ashore at Golden Beach, dense buildings at the foot of the long narrow peninsula opposite

The Golden Coast pier arching into glittering water, its stone span lined with visitors

Huoju 8th Street sloping straight down to the sea, sign-hung buildings on both sides and crowds of visitors

The destroyer Dalian at its pier, twin main gun barrels on the grey hull pointing skyward

Twin main gun and multi-barrel anti-submarine rocket launchers on Dalian’s foredeck

Waves breaking on Naxianghai beach, a row of white wind turbines on the distant shoreline

A white wind turbine on the Naxianghai coast, three long blades rising above the pines

Grass rippling in the gale at Naxianghai beach, two red windmill decorations on the shore, heavy cloud over the sea

Clip from Penguins of Madagascar: four penguins standing blankly in driving snow, a ship’s bow and anchor chain behind

A visitor clutching their hat in the howling wind at Naxianghai, colored floats bobbing offshore

The mint-green electric sidecar trike rented in Naxianghai town, instructions and a QR code on the nose

A pirate-ship indoor playground in Naxianghai, a little girl climbing the orange slide, a white wind turbine behind

Golden sunset clouds on the drive back to town, wind turbines lining the roadside

The long stone steps of Huancui Tower Park climbing through pines toward the three-tiered tower

The Deng Shichang bronze statue in the central square below the Huancui Tower steps, facing a straight city avenue

Map of the Bohai Bay region with Weihai circled in red at the eastern tip of the Jiaodong Peninsula, facing Korea across the sea

A white Western-style old building on a Weihai street, arched windows and dark pitched roof from the British lease era
A white building in Weihai whose arched windows and pilasters echo English Renaissance architecture

Street signs at the Xinwei Side Road-Haiping Street junction, Korean names printed beneath the Chinese

A Korean restaurant sign in Chinese and Korean, a poster of a hanbok-clad girl serving soup by the door

A bilingual Chinese-Korean sign by the night beach reading: across the sea lies Korea

Rows of red pointed roofs across Weihai, high-rises and hills in the distance

Weihai map with the four recommended lodging areas circled in red: north coast, downtown, the railway station, and Naxianghai

Translucent rice sheets for dipping in chili sauce, ringed by shredded egg, cucumber, purple radish and wood ear

A plate of plump thin-skinned Spanish mackerel dumplings with a small bowl of dark dipping sauce

The seafood platter: starfish, oysters, scallops and prawns spread over a bed of clams on an iron tray

Steamed sea bass filleted and plated, showered with scallions in glossy soy sauce

Sweet-spicy stir-fried baby squid with chives and wood ear in a glossy brown sauce

Sea intestine over rice: sliced sea intestine and diced pork topped with bright chives

Steamed egg custard served in two spiny sea urchin shells, dotted with scallions

Shell-on oysters heaped on a red-rimmed plate at Longcheng Restaurant, red dipping sauce in a bowl printed with the house name

Looking out through the Zhudao Restaurant compound gate at night, glass gatekeeper rooms still flanking the entrance

Zhudao Restaurant’s dining hall converted from an old building, yellow-slipcovered chairs and dark long tables

Stir-fried octopus tentacles with bright celery stems, glistening on the plate
A basin of orange-red stew with sea cucumber, shrimp, octopus and egg ribbons on the surface
Golden deep-fried small fish laid on a white plate with a little pile of pepper-salt

A quicksand souvenir of the stranded freighter Blueways held in hand, a gull over the ship in blue glitter

Spreadsheet of trip expenses itemizing six days of transport, dining, activities and amounts by category

Stacked bar chart of trip spending: dining and intercity transport dominate, lodging next
