Developer Story is now available

Many of you on Meta have been following along and giving early feedback on the return of Developer Story. Today, we’re taking the next big step: Developer Story is moving out of opt-in beta and is now generally available across Stack Overflow for all users.

If you took part in the beta, thank you! Your feedback directly influenced decisions on the foundational components. If you’re seeing this for the first time, welcome aboard! Your feedback, questions and requests will continue to help shape things as we move forward.

Why we brought Dev Story back (and why it looks different)

When Developer Story was deprecated roughly five years ago alongside the jobs board, we heard clear frustration from our most dedicated contributors. The platform was missing a crucial piece: a way to showcase the individual developer beyond basic reputation and badge counts.

The landscape has shifted drastically since then. LLMs and AI chatbots rely heavily on Stack Overflow's vast historical dataset, but knowledge creation still depends on real developers solving real, complex technical problems. At the same time, AI-generated resumes and CVs flood in to recruiters hiring for technical roles, making it difficult to identify skilled individuals that truly meet a job’s requirements.

Our objective with the new Dev Story is to provide a platform that showcases how you think, solve problems, and contribute across your areas of practice.

What’s included in today's release

Here is what is active on your Developer Story today:

  • Verified Platform Accomplishments: Automatically showcases your top tag percentiles, accepted answers, reputation milestones, and top contributions. This provides potential employers and collaborators with objective verification of your experience in specific areas of practice.
  • Living Portfolio Timeline: Map out your career milestones, GitHub projects, blog posts, and best Stack Overflow contributions into a single chronological narrative. Tell your story while showcasing your accomplishments.
  • Decoupled Data and Privacy-First Architecture: When you access your Developer Story for the first time, it only utilizes information that was already present on your public Stack Overflow profile. Edit fields on your Dev Story (such as location, professional title, or links) without altering your public Q&A profile. You maintain granular control over what is displayed.

(Note: If you had a Dev Story prior to 2022, that historical data was permanently deleted to comply with data retention policy, when the original feature was retired. Everyone starts with a clean, privacy-compliant slate.)

What’s coming next

Today’s launch is not a finished, static monument. We are following a strict "release early and often" model, deploying updates continuously based on community telemetry and feedback.

We are positioning Dev Story as the anchor of a broader effort called Stack Identity: a verified, portable proof-of-work layer for developers across the web.

How to get started & where to give feedback

Head over to stackoverflow.com/dev-story/ to view your automatically-generated story as a standalone page.

Click the Edit button at the top to customize your header, add timeline entries and milestones, manage specialities, or toggle privacy preferences.

You can always access your Dev Story via the tab on your profile page’s navigation, linked to your story’s URL with the parameter ?embed=profile that retains the standard profile navigation at the top.

Your feedback is essential. Because this feature will continue to evolve, we need your insight to guide our priorities. Please leave your thoughts in the answers below (or post a new question tagged with developer-story) to report bugs, discuss layout changes, or make suggestions.

Tell us what’s working, what’s broken, and what you’d like to see next on your Developer Story!
