Investing - Theory, News & General • Re: How long should a retiree's TIPS ladder be, and why?
The answer to OP’s question depends on your situation and what problem you are trying to solve.
We have a 10 year TIPS ladder that we count as part of our bond allocation. I was intrigued by Bill Berenstein’s suggestion that if you have won the game, you should stop playing and eliminate the risk of a market crash. And I think if we were closer to just having enough I would have given it more consideration. But most of our portfolio will go to our heirs and charities, so we stay invested to (hopefully) capture the risk premium for them. 10 years seems long enough for markets to recover when they go through one of their “barking mad” phases.
