The Case for Saving Every AI Chat
As I’ve written about before, I’m not one to delete my digital communications or files: I like having it all at my fingertips.
My AI chats are no exception.
As we spend more of our working lives interacting with artificial intelligence, our chats are becoming part of our work product—a record of our research, brainstorming, problem-solving and decision-making. That makes them a potentially valuable source of intelligence. So I have saved the transcript of just about every AI chat session I have ever conducted, across ChatGPT, Claude and Claude Code.
With the chats saved, you also have the option of deleting past chats from your AI platforms, which you may wish to do if you have concerns about personal privacy or the possibility that your chats will be used as training data.
Once you have your chats exported (more on exactly how to do that later), think of your archive as the equivalent of a big folder full of meeting transcripts or rough drafts; it’s a searchable snapshot of your work in progress, past and present tasks, or thinking process. There is no question that is a convenience. But it also may change the way you work and think.
For starters, you no longer will have to rack your brain trying to remember if your chat about next quarter’s sales strategy took place in ChatGPT or Gemini or Claude. If you have them saved, you can just search your files for the phrase “Q4 sales.”
You can even use AI to synthesize insights from several conversations: If you’re using an AI tool that has access to your local hard drive, or if you’ve stored your exported chats in an online service that connects to your favorite chat platform (the way ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude connect to Google Drive), you can ask AI to look at all your past chats, and find recurring themes or patterns.
For instance, I recently gave Claude Code a year of my chats, and asked it to infer my top values and priorities from the way I talked about different tasks. It found a surprising pattern: I talked about my tech work as thrilling and inspiring whenever it had my full attention, but I described it as a guilty pleasure whenever it was competing with other tasks on my plate. That has made me more deliberate about separating tech-work days from tech-free days, so that I can get the thrill without the guilt.
Another example of how the archive has changed the way I work: I used to slog away on a single project, even if it was no longer the most immediate priority or if I’d run out of mental energy for that particular task. It was just too much of a nightmare to leave something half done, when I knew how hard it would be to pick up the threads in another week or month.
Now, on any task where I’m using AI (which is a lot of tasks!), it’s easy for me to pick up where I left off. I just ask the AI to look through my chats from last week or last month, find everything related to the project I’m picking up, and then synthesize my previous conversations into a summary of what I’ve already accomplished and which steps lie ahead.
Your collection of past chats also can improve your chats in the future. When I was updating the instructions I use for Claude, for example, I had it review a bunch of my past chats to look for signals of when I was annoyed by an AI response. (Signals that are mostly unprintable, I’m afraid.) Then I asked the AI to develop a new set of guidelines for future chats, so that it would be less likely to annoy me in those specific ways.
Fortunately, saving your chats doesn’t necessarily require any special tech skills. You can easily export every chat transcript from every AI platform you use regularly, and then save those individual chat transcripts to a folder on your hard drive (and ideally, sync that folder to a cloud service like OneDrive, Google Drive or Dropbox).
The simplest approach is to use the built-in export functions available from each major AI platform. On most platforms you’ll find the export option by rooting around in your settings, but you can also ask the AI you’re using. Typically, the export you get from a platform will be a giant bundle of files you can unzip and store on your drive.
It is a pain to manually export your entire chat history every week, and it will quickly fill your storage space with duplicates. Another option is to install browser extensions that let you export any chat, whenever you want; some extensions even let you export many chats at once, or work across more than one platform (like ChatGPT and Claude).
Your chat transcripts are even more useful if you can keep them up-to-date, so once you’ve seen their value, consider asking AI to help you automate the export process. I asked Claude to write a little computer program that exports all my ChatGPT chats, Claude chats and Claude Code chats, and to set up a timed trigger that runs that script every day, and downloads the latest version of any chat that has been created or changed since my last export (and throws out any older versions they are now replacing).
One further piece of advice: Keep your AI chats separate from the work that you do yourself. On my own computer, AI exports live in a subfolder called “AI Chat History,” which is on the “AI Land” portion of my hard drive, where I keep all AI-generated files. That way I never risk mistaking something an AI generated for something I wrote myself.
Even more important, keeping AI work separate from my own work ensures that when I want to give an AI examples of my thinking or voice, I am training it on my personal work product, instead of letting it feed on the exhaust of previous AI efforts.
