how to block a website?

I'm finding that my browser keeps getting redirected to a website that selling McAfee antivirus, and I'd like to block it. In the grand scheme of things this is not a huge problem, but it's driving me crazy. I can include the url if that would help, but I hesitate to give this site any extra attention.

There are a lot of posts about this topic already. Some say to block it by adding a loop back alias 127.0.0.1 in /etc/hosts. I have tried this, but it didn't work. I'm not sure why.

Others suggest running iptables or nftables, and blocking the site there. I'm actually already doing this for several sites with nftables, and it works, but not for this one. One thread says that iptables can't block an https website, but I am literally blocking one on this computer right now (I just checked, it's blocked). Perhaps nftables is more capable than iptables in this way? Honestly, I'm still an nftables newbie. But it doesn't work for this spam site.

On thread suggests to just use a browser plugin. I have not tried this yet, but since there is absolutely no reason that my system would ever need to connect to this site, a system-wide block is preferable.

For reference I am running brave browser on gentoo linux.

I would be grateful for suggestions. Although, as I said, this isn't a terrible problem, just really annoying.
