VMDB – A community compatibility database for VM gaming and Proton

Hey everyone,

I’ve been working on a project called VMDB for about five months now. I originally built it because finding out whether a specific game works inside a VM can be surprisingly annoying. The information often exists somewhere in forum threads, Reddit comments or random posts, but there wasn’t really one place where people could report their actual setups and results.

So I built one.

VMDB is a community-driven compatibility database for VM gaming. Users can report whether a game works and include details such as the virtualization platform, host and guest OS, CPU/GPU, GPU passthrough, anti-cheat, required tweaks and performance.

The idea is that instead of just seeing “works” or “doesn’t work”, you can see under which configuration it worked. Especially with GPU passthrough and anti-cheat, that distinction can matter quite a bit.

I recently also added Proton compatibility reports. VM and Proton reports are kept separate, so VMDB can be used purely for VM gaming, purely for Proton, or both.

There’s also a searchable Games section where you can browse and filter the database without creating an account.

VMDB is still pretty young and the database obviously depends on community contributions, but the platform itself has reached a point where I’m happy with how it works.

If anyone here is running gaming VMs, VFIO setups or Linux gaming in general, I’d really appreciate feedback especially if there’s information you think VMDB should collect that would actually be useful for these setups.
