Company requested a design task but there was barely a pre-interview - is this the new norm?

Hi all, I recently applied for a Graphic Design role and fairly soon after my application, I received a response that I was an impressive candidate and that they'd like to discuss further. Just because of general life (I work FT), and later found out the person trying to contact me was in a completely different timezone, it took about a week to finally get onto the phone to speak to the hiring person. (Note: I did email after I'd attempt call backs and specified that I was happy to receive any questions in the meantime via email since calls always seemed to be elusively timed). The phone call finally happened and I was expecting a phone interview or a pre-cursor to a phone/virtual/in-person discussion . Instead, we did a shorter-than-short discussion about when I had completed my studies, if I had working rights, how much notice I could give to my current work etc. (mind you, this was all in the application already), that then went into "we'll be sending you a design task, please let us know when you will complete it by." I find it a bit weird that I've not even really had a proper interview but I am already being asked to do Round 2 work (I call it that because that is what it says it is in the email). I don't feel I've really been in Round 1 at this rate lol It's nice they asked for my own timeline, particularly as I'm currently working full-time and realistically might not be able to provide on this brief in a sufficient timeline and though they are not expectant of the timeline, I feel like it undermines my time and I'm worried that I will spend more time on this than necessary and it will feel like providing free work. Is this now a common expectation for a design role? And would it be unprofessional to not complete the task (obviously I would tell them I wasn't completing it) Would love some insights from others 😊
