Horizon Organic Milk recalled after customers report products with ‘unpleasant' smell, taste

More than 50,000 cases of Horizon Organic Milk distributed to grocery stores nationwide has been recalled after consumers reported some cartons looked, tasted and smelled unpleasant, with the brand saying they could be “prematurely” spoiled.

The popular Colorado-based brand, with a recognizable red label, posted a notice about its voluntary recall Aug. 7. An enforcement report from the Food and Drug Administration was also issued, indicating the product “has the potential to be spoiled.”

According to Horizon, the recall impacts 12 and 18-packs of shelf-stable, eight ounce cartons of 1% Chocolate Milk. The packages were distributed to retailers across the US, with the following “Best By” dates and UPC codes:

• 12-count packs:
  • Item 136990, UPC 742365002700
  • Best by dates of Jan. 30, 2027; Jan. 31, 2027, Feb. 1, 2027; Feb. 2, 2027 and Feb. 3, 2027
• 18-count packs:
  • Item 136917, UPC 742365208867
  • Best by dates of Jan. 31, 2027; Feb 1, 2027; Feb. 2, 2027

Horizon said it received complaints from people who bought the product and found that the packaging appeared to be “bloated.” It also said the milk in the cartons could be subject to “premature spoilage and may have an unpleasant taste, odor and/or texture.”

An investigation into the cause was underway, Horizon said.

Anyone who purchased the product is urged to throw it away. Customers should also keep proof of purchase and can contact Horizon regarding refunds.
