Pasqal Stock Slump Highlights Growing Macro Risks Facing Quantum Computing Industry

Pasqal stock is off to a sluggish start on Wall Street just days after becoming the latest quantum computing player to go public. But early volatility is hardly a reason for alarm.

The French quantum developer appeared to be making its trading debut at just the right time. Breakthroughs in the field had accelerated driving interest to an all-time high, while growing government support created a favorable environment for the technology’s next phase.

The occasion was just as momentous for CEO Wasiq Bokhari, who saw the listing as an opportunity to introduce the company “on a global stage.”

Bokhari told Barron’s that the listing was the high point of a busy year for Pasqal. The company published several peer-reviewed papers, including one showcasing what he described as “scientifically rigorous quantum advantage in simulating materials.”

The market was just as enthusiastic at first, with shares nearly doubling in their Nasdaq debut on Friday. However, that enthusiasm quickly cooled. Pasqal stock fell 9.5% on Monday and continued its slide into Tuesday, swinging sharply throughout the session to fall as much as 26%. Shares ultimately closed down 10%, putting them far behind the broader market.

This year has seen a flood of blank-check mergers, the preferred path to the public market for most quantum companies. Just one company, Honeywell -backed Quantinuum , opted for a traditional initial public offering in a first for the industry.

Recent history suggests the trend won’t necessarily hold, as quantum stocks have generally done well in first month following listing despite a volatile start. Based off their closing price on the first day of trading, Xanadu Quantum Technologies , Horizon Quantum, and Quantinuum each posted double- or triple-digit percentage gains in their first month on the public market.

It’s a positive signal for Quantinuum in particular. As one of the industry’s largest public debuts in recent memory, the company’s launch follows months of market speculation. Shares were expected to pop on day one, bolstered by a Commerce Department initiative that named Quantinuum as one of nine recipients of federal funding.

Although shares rose as much as 13% in their debut, the momentum quickly fizzled. The stock closed below its offer price by the end of its first full trading day. Yet Quantinuum rallied during its first month as a public company, gaining more than 24%.

Some peers fared even better: software play Horizon gained over 32% in its first month on the market, while Xanadu stock more than doubled. Others haven’t fared as well: IQM, which made its debut in early July, fell 24% during its first month, while Infleqtion, which went public in February, dropped 31% over a comparable period.

These moves only tell half the story. Unfolding against a weak broader market, they show that enthusiasm for quantum technology is ultimately no match for macro turbulence.

Pasqal faced a similar fate on Tuesday during a widespread selloff in quantum shares, which coincided with losses across all three major U.S. stock indexes. This slump highlighted a growing risk-off sentiment on Wall Street, amplified by a spike bond yields and climbing oil prices—a troubling backdrop for quantum stocks, which are viewed as particularly high-risk assets.

Although support for the technology has been growing, with the investment case only strengthening amid recent technological breakthroughs and ramping government support, the technological advances that are expected to open the door to broader commercialization remain several years away.

The biggest hang-up remains fault tolerance, or the ability of a machine to operate normally even when its components fail. Fault tolerance is inherently built into classical systems, but far harder to achieve in quantum systems, which are much more sensitive to disruptions in their environment.

Yet the industry appears to be pacing toward a breakthrough more rapidly than expected. The U.S. government, for one, is pushing for a fault-tolerant quantum computer to be deployed at a national laboratory by 2028, ahead of even some of the most aspirational timelines.

That sense of urgency is driven largely by national security concerns, as rivals like China pour resources into quantum development. IonQ , the largest pure-play quantum company by market capitalization, has become a consistent fixture in federal discussions.

Speaking to Barron’s, CEO Niccolo de Masi noted a distinct surge in momentum behind the technology, describing the U.S. effort as “coordinated” and “highly forward-looking.”

“I think whoever wins this race controls the 21st century,” de Masi said. “The U.S. is doing great on GPUs. China’s behind, but not a decade behind. I think the same is true for quantum technologies.”

Bokhari, too, acknowledged that attitudes toward quantum technology are changing. “We definitely see a positive environment and a very receptive environment,” he said. “But we aren’t building a business with the assumption of a receptive environment, which means we’ve been focused on the fundamentals.”

It’s a surprisingly grounded take on a topic that often strays into aspirational territory. For now, quantum computing remains largely a speculative investment—and while that means boundless potential, it also makes short-term stock movements difficult to predict.
