U.S. Targets Iran in Fresh Wave of Strikes

The U.S. military said it was carrying out strikes on Iranian targets Tuesday amid an escalation in fighting over the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. strikes came after Iran attempted to attack commercial ships and U.S. servicemembers in the Middle East, according to U.S. Central Command.

Fighting has picked back up this week as the U.S. and Iran battle over control over the strategic waterway. On Sunday, Iran fired missiles at U.S. bases after the U.S. struck Iranian launchers that it said were preparing to fire rockets loaded with sea mines into the strait.

Several ships were struck by projectiles in recent days, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Operations. Iran has continued to attack ships that are coordinating with the U.S. military to quietly enter and exit the Persian Gulf, U.S. officials say. At the same time, the U.S. has maintained its blockade of Iranian ports to try and choke off trade to Iran.
