Waymo Expands Paid Robotaxi Rides to Denver, San Diego and Tampa

Waymo will begin offering paid robotaxi rides to the public in Denver, San Diego, and Tampa, Florida, bringing the number of US cities where its driverless ride-hail service is available to 14.

A subset of the tens of thousands of riders who have downloaded the Waymo app in the three cities will receive an invitation to use the service starting Tuesday, a Waymo spokesperson said. Like prior expansions in new cities, the company is inviting riders on a rolling basis “to ensure a seamless experience” before eventually making it accessible to everyone, Waymo said.

The additions will take Waymo closer to achieving its goal of operating 1 million paid weekly rides in 20 cities globally this year. The Alphabet Inc. unit is already the leading robotaxi provider in the US. It provides a total of more than 500,000 paid trips every week and is laying the groundwork to test its service in more than a dozen places, including London and Tokyo.

Waymo said on Tuesday it will have dozens of vehicles available in a limited operating area during the initial launch in each of the three cities, before expanding the fleet to “hundreds over time.” It currently has more than 4,000 robotaxis across the US.

In San Diego and Denver, rides will be offered exclusively on the new Ojai minivan model that Waymo developed with Geely Automobile Holdings’ Zeekr. In Tampa, riders will initially be able to hail Waymo’s Jaguar I-Pace robotaxis — the first and most widespread model currently — and the Ojai will be available in the future when that fleet grows, the spokesperson said.
