Fervo Signs Geothermal Power Deal With Google for 2028 Launch
Alphabet Inc. has tapped geothermal developer Fervo Energy Co. to provide up to 396 megawatts of power for a prospective data center in Utah beginning in 2028.
Geothermal’s clean, around-the-clock electricity is attractive to tech companies in search of continuous power — and a route to meet longstanding climate goals. Under the agreement announced Tuesday, Alphabet has the option to tap another 600 megawatts of capacity from Fervo’s Utah-based Cape Station project by 2030. That would bring Alphabet’s order to nearly 1 gigawatt, the equivalent of a traditional nuclear reactor.
Fervo’s shares soared in early trading Tuesday by as much as 25%. The Cape Station geothermal development is still subject to Utah regulatory approvals, the company said in a filing last week.
