Popular cold remedy sold nationwide recalled due to potential contamination
A popular cold remedy sold nationwide has been recalled because of potential microbial contamination.
Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs and Zicam AllClear Swabs were voluntarily recalled Aug. 10, according to a Food and Drug Administration enforcement report.
The recall, from Zicam parent company Church & Dwight, said 318,600 cartons of the swabs were recalled after inspectors found “out of limit” results during microbial testing.
The recall is limited exclusively to its swab products, Zicam said. No other Zicam products were impacted.

“At Church & Dwight, we are committed to maintaining consumer trust by upholding the highest quality standards and ensuring the safety of our products,” a statement from the company said. “As part of this commitment, we are voluntarily recalling all lots of Zicam® Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs and Zicam Nasal AllClear Swabs. We are working closely with the FDA throughout this process to ensure that all appropriate actions are taken to protect our consumers. The safety and well-being of our consumers is our top priority.”
The recall is marked a “Class II” recall by the FDA, which means exposure can cause temporary illness or side effects but that serious health problems aren’t likely.
Customers who have purchased the product are urged to stop using it immediately and apply for a refund online.
According to the company, Zicam’s homeopathic cold remedy nasal swabs can shorten the length of a cold if used early on.
