Poland urges Ukraine to resolve tensions over historical issues

Poland's President Karol Nawrocki has sent a letter to Volodymyr Zelensky, congratulating him on Ukraine’s Independence Day and highlighting several “sensitive issues” Warsaw wants to resolve with Kyiv. Marcin Przydacz, head of the Bureau of International Policy at the Polish president’s office, revealed that in his letter, Nawrocki wished Ukraine victory in its war with Russia and acknowledged there are several matters causing tension between Poland and Ukraine that Warsaw hopes to address.

Przydacz emphasized that above all, Poland is committed to maintaining good neighborly relations. He said Polish authorities are especially eager to reach an understanding with Kyiv over historical issues. The Polish official expressed dissatisfaction with Zelensky’s decision to sign a law creating a National Pantheon, arguing that this move “will not improve relations — not only with Poland, but with other countries and with all of Western Europe.”

Przydacz added that the Polish president’s office and the Ukrainian president’s office remain in dialogue, though Nawrocki does not plan to visit Kyiv in the near future. Instead, Nawrocki will focus on attending the G20 leaders’ summit in Miami, United States, which is scheduled for December 14-15, 2026.

Nawrocki previously commented on disagreements with Ukraine and described his earlier talks with Zelensky as “polite.” It was also explained in Poland why Nawrocki revoked Zelensky’s highest Polish state honor.
