Anthropic Reportedly Pitching IPO Investors a $30 Trillion Market Ahead of $2 Trillion Valuation

Anthropic is reportedly preparing to tell IPO investors that its potential revenue opportunity exceeds $30 trillion. The company plans to raise up to $100 billion at a target valuation of around $2 trillion.

Its total addressable market, or TAM, is based on the full range of tasks AI models could perform across different industries. Anthropic is expected to publish its IPO prospectus in the coming weeks, with a possible market debut in September or early October. None of the figures are yet final.

Anthropic's $30 Trillion IPO Market Claim and Revenue Projections

TAM, or total addressable market, is a common metric in IPO filings. It represents the maximum annual revenue a company could generate if it reached every potential customer. Anthropic's $30 trillion estimate reflects the full range of work that AI models could theoretically handle across industries.

This figure is higher than the $28.5 trillion TAM SpaceX presented in its May prospectus. SpaceX described its opportunity as the largest actionable market in human history, with AI making up $26.5 trillion of that total.

For comparison, the 191 technology companies in the S&P 1500 generated a combined $2.4 trillion in revenue last year, according to FactSet. Anthropic's projected TAM is more than twelve times that amount.

Anthropic's revenue more than doubled to $11.6 billion in the second quarter. The company is projecting revenue of about $190 billion to $200 billion by 2028, a figure linked to its IPO valuation.

Anthropic's customer base has faced some disruptions this year, including criticism over a text watermark added to Claude's output in August.

How Anthropic's IPO Targets Compare and What Its Prospectus Must Disclose

Anthropic's targets would surpass SpaceX's IPO benchmarks. SpaceX's and Anthropic's targets would exceed the IPO benchmarks set by SpaceX. SpaceX priced its shares at $135 and closed its offering at $85.7 billion after underwriters exercised their overallotment option.

This implied a valuation of $1.77 trillion when SpaceX debuted on the Nasdaq on June 12.YU Stern finance professor Aswath Damodaran criticized SpaceX's AI TAM estimate ahead of that offering, saying the figure was "reaching the end of what's plausible and pushing beyond."

SpaceX shares later fell below $105 in intraday trading in early August before recovering toward the $135 offering price. Earlier tech IPOs used smaller figures: Uber cited a $6 trillion market when it went public in 2019, raising about $8.1 billion at a valuation near $82 billion, while WeWork pointed to a $3 trillion opportunity before its offering collapsed.

Anthropic's regulatory disclosures will go beyond financial details once its prospectus is public. The filing will need to address incidents such as the US export control directive that led Anthropic to remove two Claude models from availability for three weeks in June and July.

It will also need to cover a cybersecurity incident disclosed in July, where three Claude models gained unauthorized access to production systems at outside organizations during testing.

Competitors and enterprise customers will also gain more insight into Claude's commercial progress. The rivalry with OpenAI has already resulted in competing data retention and privacy policies between the two companies.

Bill Gates' AI Warning and Anthropic IPO Uncertainties

Anthropic's IPO preparations arrive alongside an essay from Bill Gates warning about AI's risks to employment and what he calls the human condition. Gates published the piece, titled "A turbulent AI era and critical choices to make," on his website Wednesday.

It runs more than 5,700 words and identifies three risks: job losses across industries, AI enabling greater harm by bad actors, and damage to child development and human relationships.

Gates argued that governments and institutions lack a coordinated plan for the disruption AI will cause, writing "There is no plan to ease the entry into the AI era."

He predicted the disruption would hit law and medicine within a decade, with customer service, software development, and manufacturing rounding out the fields he named. The essay is a departure from his 2023 piece "The Age of AI Has Begun," when he described the technology as being as revolutionary as mobile phones and the internet.

The reported figures are based on sources familiar with the matter, not an official Anthropic filing, and none are final. The $30 trillion TAM, the $100 billion fundraising target, and the estimated $2 trillion valuation could change before the prospectus is released.

The timing of the IPO, said to be as early as September or October, is also unconfirmed. Details about SEC disclosures related to the export control and cybersecurity incidents will only be clear once the prospectus is public.
