Geografie dello sguardo: l'esperienza del paesaggio tra oggettività americana e sensibilità italiana (“Geographies of the Gaze: The Experience of Landscape Between American Objectivity and Italian Sensibility”) is the undergraduate thesis by Andrea A. Lima, student at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Palermo. The project examines, across four chapters, the contemporary modes of landscape representation in photography: from the end of the myth of untouched landscape theorized by “New Topographics”, to the journey as a reunion of sign and narrative following the lesson of “Viaggio in Italia”, through to “Terrain Vague”, where use, memory, and oblivion coexist.
The authenticity of the image emerges not so much from the absence of intervention, but from an awareness of the choices made within the potentialities of the medium itself. The use of the typeface Slight Chance by David Jonathan Ross Ross was essential in fully conveying the meaning of the project.
The second part of the volume is dedicated to the photographic project that investigates the themes outlined above.
