Former Rockstar Tech Lead Says GTA 6 Leaks Are No Big Deal

Former Rockstar technical lead Obbe Vermeij has called the ongoing GTA 6 leaks "a nothing burger" and defended the studio's attempts to stop them.

Vermeij, who worked at Rockstar from 1995 to 2009, said Rockstar New York sometimes overreacts but stopping leaks is part of their job. The comments follow new footage and threats of major story spoilers from an unidentified leaker known as Cyberleek. Rockstar has not made a public statement but has taken legal action.

Vermeij believes the leaks have little impact since most players are not looking for spoilers.

Vermeij's Take on the GTA 6 Leaks and Rockstar's Response

Writing on X, Vermeij used his experience as a former Rockstar lead to say that Rockstar New York "overreacts a bit at times," before adding, "But it is their job to try to stop these kinds of leaks."

He argued the leaks are "a nothing burger" because 90% of prospective players are not looking online for spoilers. "I was there during Hot Coffee," he added, referring to the incident in which an explicit mini-game mistakenly made its way into GTA San Andreas.

"It was a nightmare for management [Rockstar's New York offices], but didn't affect us [Rockstar North] much," Vermeij said. "The current leaks are far less consequential than [Hot Coffee] was. It looks like GTA 6 will be phenomenal and sell for the next 15 years or so. The leaks are just a tiny blip."

Rockstar's response to leaks has affected employees who were not involved. Bloomberg's Jason Schreier says Rockstar introduced strict security measures, including a return-to-office requirement for all staff after the 2022 GTA 6 leak. This led to more frustration when new leaks appeared last week.

The current leaker remains unidentified and has threatened to release story spoilers. Vermeij says Rockstar is within its rights to take legal action.

What Rockstar Has Not Confirmed About the Latest GTA 6 Leaks

Rockstar has not made a public statement about the latest leaks or Vermeij's comments. The identity of Cyberleek is still unknown. Story spoilers may now appear, in addition to the gameplay and map details already leaked.

It is unclear if the leaks will affect GTA 6's reception, but the game is still likely to be a major release. Rockstar's official reveal is still planned for its Netflix presentation.
