‘Stop feeding': Cans of popular Midwest dog food brand recalled nationwide

A popular dog food brand is recalling thousands of cases of wet dog food sold nationwide and telling pet owners to “stop feeding the product.”

Wisconsin-based Fromm Family Foods announced that more than 5,000 cases of its wet canned dog food were being recalled due to “potential metal contamination.”

The recall includes 3,852 cases of its Turkey Pâté Wet food and 1,973 cases of its Diner Classics Milo’s Meatloaf Pâté Wet wet dog food.

“Consumers should stop feeding the product” to their dogs, the recall notice stated.

According to the company, the recall came after they received “complaints of metal contamination.”

“The recall was initiated after receiving complaints of metal contamination. We have identified the error, and in addition to our existing safety processes, we have put corrective actions in place to prevent this from happening again,” the company said in a release.

The recalled products were distributed to neighborhood pet stores and online outlets across the U.S. and Canada.

Though Fromm said no illnesses have reported so far, the recall from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned of the harms of even small metal pieces in dog food.

“Metal of any size, especially sharp pieces, can lead to serious health issues in dogs, including lacerations in the mouth and gastrointestinal tract,” the alert said. “Metal, when consumed in large amounts, can lead to gastrointestinal upset, partial blockage, and a risk of intestinal obstruction. Consumers whose dogs have consumed any of the affected product and are exhibiting these symptoms should contact their veterinarian.”

Symptoms of possible metal ingestion include choking, vomiting, loss of appetite, lethargy or stomach discomfort.

Anyone who may have purchased the affected cans is being asked to return them to the retailer they purchased at.
