Apple faces privacy questions as OpenAI’s ChatGPT gains control of iMessage

OpenAI

OpenAI has introduced a new capability that lets ChatGPT take control of Apple’s iMessage service, a development that could heighten privacy concerns for the Cupertino colossus, according to Bloomberg News’ Mark Gurman.

The feature, which rolled out Thursday and is available in ChatGPT on the Mac, enables the AI system to read, write, and send text messages. It can also search message history, generate summaries, and pull other information from conversations in the Apple Messages app.

While the integration offers greater convenience for users who want AI assistance with their communications, it raises questions about how much access third-party systems should have to personal messaging data on Apple devices. Apple has long positioned privacy as a core strength of its ecosystem, making the expansion of ChatGPT’s reach into iMessage a notable development.
