The AI ‘Grammar’ Agents Need to Source and Cite Your Marketing Content

Deliberately leaving a few spelling and grammar mistakes in your content might prove a human wrote it, but it won’t impress your customers and prospects.

There’s also a technical grammar that governs how blog posts, product pages, and other assets are marked up for agents. Both matter now, because search traffic is increasingly shaped by a mix of human and AI activity.

Enterprise teams spend 16.6 hours a week, on average, trying to improve AI visibility, according to the Future of the Web report. Most of that effort goes to distributing content, not to making it legible to agents in the first place.

It’s the equivalent of buying a giant billboard, then printing the ad in a language no one reads. Getting the grammar right before you publish is how you avoid that waste.

Editorial grammar: the structure of meaning

Good editorial grammar goes beyond commas in the right places. It’s how you make content legible to the agents now reading it:

  • Headings as sentence structure: Headings once just broke up the page. Now your H1s, H2s, and H3s signal topic and subtopic for agents to parse. An H2 might frame a section on omnichannel retail, while each H3 covers a specific channel.
  • Topic sentences as declarations: Agents, like most readers, won’t finish every paragraph. Put the key point first: your data, your solution, or your proof. Don’t make them wait for it.
  • Lists vs. prose: A numbered or bulleted list signals a sequence or a set. Prose signals an argument. Choose deliberately, so agents can tell which one they’re reading.
  • Entity consistency: Name things the same way every time. If your product is “Microsoft 365,” don’t also call it “M365,” “Microsoft Office,” and “Office” in the same post. Each variant tells an agent to build a separate model of what should be one entity. Pick one name and use it throughout.

Technical grammar: the markup of meaning

Readers never see this layer, but it’s a big part of what brings them to your page. These signals always mattered for SEO. Now they matter for answer engine optimization (AEO) too. Always check:

  • Semantic HTML as vocabulary: Tags like , , , and tell agents what kind of content they’re reading, so they can surface what matters for a conversational answer.
  • Schema markup: It may be obvious to you that a page is an article, how-to guide, or FAQ. Agents need it spelled out, as Article, HowTo, or FAQPage, so they route to the right asset.
  • JSON-LD structured data: This is the machine-readable label most agents read first. For a webinar page, correct JSON-LD flags it as an Event and includes the date, speaker, and registration URL. Absent or wrong, and agents are left to guess.
  • Canonicals, sitemaps, and internal links as punctuation: A single product page can spawn many URLs. Canonicals tell agents which one to trust. Sitemaps signal freshness. Internal links show which of your pages is the authority on a topic.

The Future of the Web report found 72% of enterprise leaders say freshness still matters for AI discovery. Structured freshness signals like a sitemap’s lastmod and schema’s dateModified are how you communicate it.

What ungrammatical content looks like to an agent

You can usually spot a page that’s hard for agents to read. The headings are decorative instead of descriptive. The main claim is buried three sentences deep, in the passive voice. The same product goes by four names. There’s no structured data, so nothing declares what kind of page it is. The whole thing is a wall of prose with no scannable entry point.

The cost is concrete. Agents misattribute the content, extract only part of it, or skip it for a competitor whose page is easier to parse. And the damage doesn’t stop at the machine: 86% of readers say they always or sometimes visit the original source after an AI summary. When they land on a page that’s hard to follow, the visit is wasted.

A grammatically clean page does the opposite. Its structure is obvious from the first heading down, so the agent understands it, and so does the person who clicks through.

Implications for enterprise content teams (and the CMS)

Most marketing teams already keep voice and tone guidelines. Content teams need a practical editorial grammar checklist too, something editors can apply without a developer:

  • One clear topic per heading, in a real hierarchy.
  • The key claim in the first sentence of each section.
  • One name per entity, used consistently.
  • Lists for sets and steps; prose for arguments.
  • Plain, active sentences over dense clauses.
