In Bronchales, a mountain village in Teruel, Spain, where my friend’s family keeps a house, the sky did something I did not think skies still did anywhere I might actually visit. I stepped outside after dinner, half expecting the usual gray-orange smear that passes for night where I live, and instead found thousands of stars packed close enough together that the sky read less like scattered points of light and more like a surface with actual weight to it. I stayed out there far longer than the reason I had stepped outside in the first place (checking whether the wifi worked better away from the house, if I am being honest about it). Something in my chest went quiet in a way it does not usually go quiet, and at the time I did not have language for it beyond noticing, privately, that I felt calmer than I had in months.

I did not think much more about it until later, when I started reading about what a sky like that has actually become across most of the continent I was standing on the edge of. Not a nice evening. Something closer to an endangered resource, and one researchers are now describing in terms that have nothing to do with how pretty it is to look at.

Where I actually live, the sky never fully goes dark. There is always a faint orange ceiling somewhere above the rooftops, familiar enough that I had stopped counting it as an absence of anything. It took standing under an actual dark sky to notice that the ceiling had a cost I had never priced in.

Ninety-nine percent of us have already lost this without noticing

A 2016 atlas of the world’s artificial night sky brightness, compiled by a research team that included Christopher Kyba at the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences, found that ninety-nine percent of people in the United States and Europe now live under skies too bright to show real darkness. Not the milky, half-visible version I am used to at home. Actual, engineered-away darkness, replaced gradually enough by a permanent low glow that most of us stopped registering it as anything other than normal years ago. A third of the planet’s population, and roughly four in five people in North America, can no longer see the Milky Way from where they sleep at night.

Kyba’s own framing of the problem is not really about astronomy at all:

“The aim should be cities that have high quality, non-glaring, warm, welcoming light — and brilliant stars above.”

That “and,” doing a lot of work in one sentence, is the part I keep sitting with. He is not arguing that cities should go dark. He is arguing that a well-lit street and a visible night sky were never supposed to be a trade-off in the first place, and that we built our way into treating them as one.

The body keeps a record the eyes stop noticing

What actually stopped me from filing Bronchales away as a nice memory and moving on was research connecting light exposure at night to something more specific than mood, in the loose sense. At the National Institute of Mental Health, Diana Paksarian led a study tracing outdoor artificial light at night alongside sleep and mental health patterns in American adolescents, and found the two were meaningfully linked at a population level. As she put it, the findings “illustrate the importance of joint consideration of both broader environmental-level and individual-level exposures in mental health and sleep research.” I am a psychology researcher, not a clinician, so I want to be exact about what that means: this is a population-level pattern connecting environmental light exposure to sleep and mental health outcomes, not a diagnosis anyone should assign to their own porch light or their own street.

That distinction matters to me more than it might sound like it should. Most of what gets written about sleep and mood treats the person as the entire unit of analysis: their habits, their screen time, their choices. Here was a study suggesting that the actual physical environment a person sleeps inside of, something almost nobody chooses and almost everybody has stopped seeing, might be carrying some of that weight instead.

A public health argument that has nothing to do with how the stars look

Richard Stevens, a professor at the University of Connecticut who has spent a career on the physiological effects of artificial light, put it more bluntly than the framing I am used to in academic writing: “There is no question that we are changing our physiology. Too much electric lighting is bad for our well-being.”

Not bad for our view. Bad for our well-being, stated with the same confidence someone might use to talk about diet or air quality, which is a register light pollution rarely gets discussed in.

My own research sits closer to place attachment than circadian biology, the emotional pull certain environments have on us and why some places feel regulating in ways we cannot always explain in the moment. Reading Stevens alongside that, the calm I felt in Bronchales stops looking like sentimentality about a pretty sky. It starts looking like a nervous system doing something specific in an environment it almost never gets access to anymore, the same way a body might exhale differently near the ocean or in actual quiet.

Bronchales did not fix anything, but it named something

I do not think one night under a clear sky changed my baseline stress level in any way a researcher would take seriously, and I would not want to overstate what a single evening can do. What it did was make an absence legible to me that I had otherwise stopped noticing, the way you do not register a low hum in a room until it stops.

I have lived most of my adult life under skies that never really go dark, and until that night in Teruel I would have told you, honestly, that I had not lost anything by it.

If any of this lands closer to home than curious for you, if flatness or low mood is something you have been carrying for longer than one good night’s sleep or one clear sky could reasonably fix, that is worth bringing to an actual professional rather than something to wait out under better stars.

For the rest of it, I do not know when I will next see a sky like that one. I know I will notice its absence differently than I used to, which might be the only real souvenir I brought back from that trip.
