Investing - Theory, News & General • Series I savings bonds versus VTAPX
Since I had already decided to liquidate Treasury Direct--not a terribly big sacrifice as most of our I bonds are in paper form--I was faced with where to put the proceeds, I have tentatively decided to use VTAPX, the Vanguard Short-Term Inflation-Protected Securities Fund because I can't think of anything better.
Here's my first take at a comparison of past history. This represents the hypothetical results of a single one-shot $10,000 investment in VTIPX at inception in 10/2012 versus a single $10,000 investment in the I bond issued on 10/2012.
I don't have any profound insights into the results. Except to say you can see the benefit of freedom from interest rate risk in I bonds. Of course sometimes that would work in favor of I bonds, sometimes against.
