Investing - Theory, News & General • Re: All Weather Portfolio DIY vs ALLW

Thank you. I do not have an option to buy Vanguard mutual funds but I do have Fidelity Retirement Commingled pool fund in my new 401k that is similar and only 0.05%. It does not have commodities or gold though but I can add these separately. ALLW outperformed VTINX in the last 12 months 18% vs 8% total return, probably because of commodities and gold

When both perform poorly it will lag...gold and commodities are not things you go long on, instead opportunistically include then aggressively re-balance out of. I held Commodities in 2021 when inflation was showing signs of spiking then sold off late into 2022, then again bought in mid-2025 when Iran conflict reared its head, sold off again when major conflicts looked coming down in June 2026. It helped boost my portfolio against oil shocks. I haven't had Gold in a while and unlikely unless it goes through another 50% crash which it will at some point again. Holding both of these in a long portfolio like the All Weather will likely cause a drag.
