Joshua Kushner’s Thrive Capital Invests $215 Million in Amazon
Joshua Kushner’s Thrive Capital has bought up roughly $215 million worth of shares in Amazon.com Inc., building on the venture firm’s push to invest in public companies.
The investment, disclosed in a regulatory filing on Friday, is poised to give Thrive exposure to a large firm benefitting from artificial intelligence, including by providing agentic AI shopping tools and computing infrastructure for other businesses. Earlier this month, Amazon surpassed $3 trillion in market value for the first time, becoming only the fifth company to reach that milestone.Thrive declined to comment. A representative for Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Thrive is best known for its early investments in companies including SpaceX, Stripe and OpenAI, the last of which is also backed by Amazon. The venture firm’s other public market holdings include Figma Inc., Stubhub Holdings Inc. and Oscar Health, which Kushner co-founded and incubated.Earlier this year, Thrive informed its shareholders that it had invested about $100 million in Shopify Inc., an e-commerce company, citing tailwinds in e-commerce from artificial intelligence, Bloomberg previously reported.
In a letter sent to limited partners earlier this week, Kushner provided more insight into his thinking on these bets. “Many of our growth-stage companies compete with, partner with, or become the next generation of public technology companies,” the letter reads. “The more precise our understanding of public markets, the better our judgment will be in private markets.”
