FDA issues nationwide recall of popular dog medicine due to glass

The Food and Drug Administration announced a nationwide recall of a popular medicine prescribed to dogs, with health officials saying the medicine could contain traces of glass fiber.

Certain lots of Adequan, from American Regent, Inc. Animal Health, were recalled July 31 after it was found some vials of the injections contained “the presence of glass fibers.” If used, the impacted doses if used could end up causing irritation, swelling, inflammation, infection or abscesses, a news release said.

The recalled medicine includes both Adequan Canine Injection for dogs and Adequan Injection for horses that were distributed to veterinarians and online pharmacies. 5 mL multi-dose vials were recalled for dogs, and 5mL single-dose vials were recalled for horses, with Lot numbers 3369, 25011, 24416 and 25265P all impacted.

Adquane injections typically prescribed by veterinarians and used in the treatment of degenerative diseases or joint problems for both dogs and horses. They are clear or slightly yellow solutions that can be injected by pet owners.

The FDA encouraged pet owners to stop using the recalled products or contact their veterinarian. Veterinary hospitals and clinics should stop using the products, and retailers should stop distribution, the release said.
