How ‘Soft Fascination’ Restores Your Tired Brain
IMAGINE SHINING A flashlight at a wall in a dark room.
If you walk toward the wall, the light will contract. The closer you get to the wall, the smaller and more focused the beam of light becomes. By the time the flashlight is an inch from the wall, you’ll see a tight, bright circle of light surrounded by darkness.
Your attention works a lot like the beam of that flashlight. You can focus it closely and intensely on something, or you can relax it—allowing it to grow soft and diffuse.
A lot of research has examined these different types of attention and their associations with mental health and cognitive functioning. This work has revealed that prolonged periods of tightly focused or “hard” attention can tire out your brain in ways that contribute to fatigue, stress, willpower breakdowns, memory lapses, burnout, and poor decision-making.
Meanwhile, activities that broaden and soften your attention can replenish your brain in ways that support psychological and cognitive well-being.

Whenever you focus on something—an act that cognitive scientists sometimes call “directed attention”—this takes effort. More effort is needed when other things (i.e., distractions) are vying for your attention, or if the thing you’re directing your attention toward requires a lot of concentration.
The kind of effort you’re expending here can run low; just as an overworked muscle grows weak, overworking your attentional muscles can tire them out.
Once attentional fatigue sets in, a lot can go wrong. Your ability to concentrate and do effortful mental work progressively declines. You become more prone to forgetfulness. You’re more likely to act impulsively and also less able to make good decisions.
According to a 2019 study in Occupational Health Science, attention fatigue fuels workplace stress and burnout. Research has also linked attention fatigue to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In fact, it can be tricky to tell the two apart. “The symptoms of ADHD and ‘attention fatigue’ so closely mirror each other that the Attention Deficit Disorders Evaluation Scale has been used as a measure of attention fatigue,” wrote the authors of a 2004 study in the American Journal of Public Health.
Experts are still trying to figure out exactly what resource in your brain is drained by tasks that require focused concentration. But whatever that resource is, there’s good evidence that distractions, multitasking, and busy urban environments all contribute to attention fatigue.
On the other hand, some activities can replenish your brain’s stores of energy in ways that support concentration, calmness, and robust cognitive functioning. According to so-called Attention Restoration Theory, or ART, these activities allow the beam of your attention to relax and expand, taking in more of what’s around you but not focusing too intently on any one thing.
Spending time in nature is one activity that ART research has shown can restore your attention. “Getting out in nature seems to relax the brain’s frontal lobes and relieve this attention fatigue,” said Phil Stieg, a professor and neurosurgeon at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, when I interviewed him back in 2021.
When I asked Stieg how time in nature accomplishes this, he said that several overlapping mechanisms of benefit are likely at work.
One that has garnered a lot of expert attention is termed “soft fascination.” The theory here is that natural environments are just stimulating enough to gently occupy the brain’s attentional muscles without fatiguing them.
“[W]hat makes an environment restorative is the combination of attracting involuntary attention softly while at the same time limiting the need for directing attention,” wrote the authors of a 2010 study in Perspectives on Psychological Sciences. Time in nature seems to hit that sweet spot.
While a little QT with Mother Nature may be the optimal route to attentional replenishment, it’s not the only one.
Research has found that mindfulness practices also promote attention restoration.
In many ways, mindfulness is a form of soft-fascination training. It attempts to loosen the mind’s preoccupation with self-focused thoughts and judgments while also broadening awareness of one’s surroundings. This seems a lot like what spending time in nature does automatically, and there’s evidence that moving mindfulness training into natural outdoor settings may augment the practice’s benefits.
Stieg, the Weill Cornell neurosurgeon I spoke with, has discussed the benefits of time in nature on his podcast This Is Your Brain. He agrees that mindfulness may be a helpful alternative for those who don’t have access to the Great Outdoors (or the time to get lost in it). He also says that avoiding things that fatigue attention—loud noises, multitasking, technology—could also reduce your need to escape into nature.
“If you’re on a cell phone for eight hours a day, your attention never gets a rest,” he said. “I don’t think spending time in nature provides all the answers, but there’s good evidence that it support a longer, healthier, emotionally stable life.”
Athletes understand that rest is as vital as training when it comes to performance and injury prevention. The work on Attention Restoration Theory argues our mental muscles operate via similar principles. The more we run our minds ragged, the more likely we are to end up weak and worn out—or worse.
