Why do often times smart, successful people join Scientology?
It has a bizarre “origin” story and often behaves like a criminal organization.
Even journalists are routinely frightened from reporting on it. I worked at Fox News for almost 20 years, with a massive legal budget and a news division that wasn’t easily scared off. We investigated big targets routinely.
But there was a lot of nervousness about taking a closer look at Scientology. There are always a hundred good stories to chase, and everyone quietly understood that going there would almost certainly bring problems.
So I decided to actually dig in on Scientology. Not to do a hit piece (you can find plenty of those already), and not to defend them either. I know some smart, successful people who are Scientologists, and some of their practices make a lot of sense. But we also know the stories of space aliens and people getting hooked up to machines for therapy. What’s really going on?
What I found was complicated. Some of what Scientology delivers is genuinely real. But the way it treats its critics is pretty scary.
